A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.
International terrorist designation and prosecution case
Earlier this month, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist group along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.
German prosecutors state the group was behind attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.
Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.
Court proceedings and international connections
The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.
In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.
Regional context and organizational structure
The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.
Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.
Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.
Previous convictions and international reactions
A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.
America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.
The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.
“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or remain detained.”
