Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
